Jack liked the twenty-first century. It was when some of his favourite people lived.

But none of them were here, which took a lot of the fun out of ending up in a deserted factory.

He looked around and swore, resisting the urge to bang his head on the wall. It had been here, there was enough latent energy for him to be sure of that, but he was too late, again, and time was running out.

"Maybe…" he muttered and sat down on a crate to fiddle with the scanner. If he could amplify the read, tweak the parameters slightly and-- "There." His reward was a faint beeping noise.

This might not be where his quarry was, but it was where it had been. Long gone it might be, but there was an energy signature, and with his on-the-fly adjustments, he could follow it.

Half an hour later, Jack reached the end of the trail and suddenly he understood what was going on. There was no way he could get it back alone -- he was good, but not that good. He needed help.

There was only one possible person to turn to in a situation like this.

He pulled out his phone and punched in a number, listening to it ring.
