Subject: Still alive

Hey guys,

It's been almost a year and a half since I saw any of you and you probably think I've fallen off the face of the Earth, but I'm still here. Actually, you probably have more of a clue about what's going on than I do and I'm sure Sam can have a whole lot of fun confusing me while she explains but it doesn't change that I haven't been able to contact anyone at Fandom since I left. But you probably noticed that already, didn't you? I'm not even sure why I'm mailing this, because I'm too damn stubborn to give up. Anyway, the telephones weren't working so the chance that this will get anywhere...

On the off chance that this does get through, I'm doing well. There's a distinct lack of jello dragons, trolls and zombies here but they've been keeping me busy. Training is hard, but so totally worth it. We've been divided in groups and I'm a Knight. There are Trolls too and they suck. Nothing as mighty as the Stickbugs, though. Shame because it could be fun turning the entire dormitory invisible. It'd be worth running those extra miles.

I had more to say, but a year is a long time and I don't know where to start. Just know that I'm doing good and that I miss Fandom a lot.

Take care of each other,

Cam

Hey babe,

Remember me? It's been a while. Too long.

I don't know where you are or who you're with, but I'm sure you're making me proud.

I still love you.

Cam

Mitchell Residence, Memphis - Christmas Day 2008

Cameron was softly humming along with the Christmas carols as he gathered up the wrapping paper from the living room floor. It'd been a good haul this year and his mother and Emily were currently in the kitchen preparing breakfast. He'd spent Christmas even and morning just with his parents and sister and they'd be going over to his grandmother's to celebrate with the rest of the family in a few hours.

The wrapping paper made a whole lot of noise as he scrunched it all up together in a big ball that he didn't hear his father until he spoke up.

"Leave that for a minute, Cam," Irwin said as he hobbled over to the couch and sat down with a sigh. He leaned his crutches against the small table beside him and motioned for Cameron to side down too as he started pulling a small box from his breast pocket. "I've got something for you."

"We just exchanged gifts, dad. You're going to spoil me," Cameron joked lightly even as he watched his father curiously, wondering what was in the box.

"I'm proud of you," Irwin huffed and waved off the objection. "Besides, you're not getting these yet. I just want you to know that you will." He grinned at Cameron's confused look and held out the box. "Open it."

Not needing to be told twice, Cameron took the box from his father. He gave him another curious look, as if he might be able to guess what was in it before he finally opened it. His eyes widened and he reached out to touch the silver medal. "Your wings."

Irwin smiled, his eyes on his son's face. "So see, you still got to earn them but when you do, they're yours."

Cameron nodded wordlessly. He wanted to pick them out of the box, but it didn't feel like he'd earned that right just yet. "Thanks, dad," he whispered and quickly turned to hug his father.

"No problem. Now give them back and go help your mother in the kitchen," Irwin chuckled.

"You're the only person I know who would demand to get their gift back," Cameron accused, but he closed the box again and handed it back to his father before jumping up to head into the kitchen.

Arnie's - May 28 2009

No one was understanding what was going on. The academy year had finished a week ago and everyone who wasn't on leave had been called into Arnie's presto. The hall was bustling as everyone was trying to guess what was going on and the wildest theories were going around as no one could remember anything like this happening before. Theories about another war or even a terrorist attack were the most popular, but the speculations ended as the superintendent stepped up to the front and called for everyone's attention.

"I know you're probably all wondering what is going on," he spoke up as soon as everyone had quieted down. "In all honesty, I find myself at a loss of words today. Or at least, a loss of believable words. Earlier this morning spaceships appeared above the major capitals in the world, including DC." The superintendent held out his arms to silence the instant murmur that spread like a wildfire between the cadets. "I'm aware this sounds very much like a movie, but you are all cadets in the United States Air Force and I trust that you will remain calm and not jump to conclusions. It appears that these aliens are friendly and they are currently negotiating with the president and other world leaders. That is all that we know so far, but you will all remain in the hall and will be informed as more information is released."

Finishing his short speech, the superintendent stepped down and headed out of the hall, his exit was followed by a lot of noise as right away everyone started talking. Cameron found himself just staring ahead, not quite believing what had been said. Then again, it wasn't like aliens were new to him but his world wasn't supposed to have them. At least it didn't sound like they were the aliens who blew up Fandom High.

"Yo Cam, you still with us?" Ferguson nudged his shoulder, pulling Cameron out of his thoughts. "How wild is this? Looks like we might get into that space program sooner."

"Didn't the General just say not to jump to conclusions?" Cameron laughed, but Ferguson's excitement was catching on even as some trepidation remained. Not all aliens were friendly, but if they were negotiating, that was good.

Some had in the meantime turned on one of the huge television screens and turned the channel to CNN. It was hard to make out anything the news anchor was saying over the excited murmurs of the hall, but the silence spread quickly as they changed over to earlier footage of the alien's first appearance. It was hard to make out at first as the image was blurry, but it looked like a human like man wearing a grey cloak and staff.

It changed again, this time to a close up and Cameron's heart stopped as he took in the chalk white face, strange scar tattoos and ghastly pale eyes. When the man spoke, his voice boomed through the hall and Cameron almost staggered back, his blood running cold and bile burned the back of his throat at the aliens' words.

"Hallowed are the Ori..."

Dear Cam:

Yeah, I vaguely remember you...

I ran away with Bel about six months ago. Phoebe and her sisters are probably after us, but damn... it's true what they say about having sex with people who try to kill you.

Hope you're doing well.

[Hey, at this point, Veronica is very much looking forward to getting her first call from her boyfriend after five weeks on her birthday. She's utterly clueless that anything is wrong ;)]
