For as standoffish as she is, Aeryn's not very good with being alone. So her fiance taking off suddenly for days, leaving her alone in strange state she's only been in two weeks is kind of having a bad effect on her. She doesn't know the area very well yet, she's still having problems with the language barrier, and that means she's mostly kept to the apartment when she's not at the gym or work, which is a lot bigger and quieter and emptier than anywhere she's ever lived.

She doesn't want to keep thinking about it, because those thoughts tend to the along the lines of "I hate this. No, really, I hate this," so Aeryn picks up the phone, dialing the person who usually provides the best distraction.

Peter was trying to figure out the best ways into and out of the principal's office in the dead of night. Sure, there was the door, but that had already been done. The phone ringing distracted him.

"You've reached the phone of Peter Parker, this is Peter Parker speaking, how may I help you?"

He couldn't even answer the phone like a normal person when his brain was working on something like this.

"I'm sorry, I don't think I caught your name," Aeryn says, deadpan.

"That would be Peter Parker," Peter said. "Hey, Aeryn, what's up?"

"Calling to make sure no one had blown up the school again yet," she says. Which is sort of true, as it's been a week since she's talked to anyone from there, and a lot can happen in that time.

"No, but we do have a psycho witch (literally) as a substitute principal while Washburn is out with her baby," Peter said. "Somebody might blow up her office just to spite her. And this time it wouldn't necessarily be a Stickbug event." Peter sounded equally proud and disappointed about that.

"Anakin mentioned her," Aeryn says, curling up in a corner of the couch. "She's really that bad?"

"She's outlawed co-ed dorm rooms, public displays of affection, and saying bad things about her on the radio. I don't know if you know Hermione Granger, but she came to me about messing with the principal. I'm pretty sure that's a sign of the apocalypse, and this lady is the Pink Rider," Peter said.

"Don't think I know her." Yes, she does. She just never cared to find out her name. "Does this principal honestly think people are going to go along with that?"

"That's what it looks like," Peter said. "It's really not going to end well for her. It should be pretty funny."

"Funny?" Aeryn repeats. "I'd think she would be lucky not to be carried into a hole by gremlins."

"That would be funny," Peter said.

"I worry about you sometimes," Aeryn says.

"Well, not funny 'ha ha,' but in terms of irony and justice, I could appreciate it on a humorous level," Peter said.

"A normal firing just wouldn't do it, hm?" she says, but she can see his point.

"It would, but looking at this situation, I don't know, I just get the sense that it's not going to happen that easily," Peter said.

"Could always stage a coup."

"If only Jamie Madrox were still here, it would all be over by now," Peter said.

"Where is he, anyway? Has anyone tried calling him?"

"I haven't, personally," Peter said. "He went back home. I don't even know if our Jamie actually exists in a technical sense anymore, and if he doesn't. whether big Jamie kept the same phone number, so it might be weird to call. 'Hey, Jamie, does the little you still exist? Oh, sorry, ma'am, wrong number.'"

"I have no idea what you just said," she tells him.

"Just be glad I didn't get into the quantum logistics that go on just to even make a phonecall between realities," Peter said. "I'd probably lose myself with that."

"I've never cared as long as it works. And it has so far," she says. "And it had better not stop."

Peter didn't say anything.

Then he started to make staticy sounds.

"Funny, Peter," she says. "I think the timing would just be too coincidental."

"If there's one thing nobody will ever take from me, it's the ability to make painfully obvious jokes," Peter said.

"Are you sure? Can we try?"

"Try all you want, it's not going to happen," Peter said, chuckling.

"Sounds like a challenge," she says, smiling. "I should probably be going. Thanks."

"Anytime, Aeryn," Peter said. "Talk to you later."

"Bye, Peter," she says, and hangs up the phone.
