Washington DC - Veronica's Apartment [Thursday Evening]

Veronica had been in DC for nearly a month now and was really enjoying her internship with the FBI. She was learning a lot and was really glad she had decided to take it.

It was a lot of work though. She was spending her evening reading through case files.


[Expecting a phone call, but open for anyone who would like to contact her. I totally meant to do more with her internship this summer, but RL sort of ate my brain.]

Oh look, there was Veronica's phone ringing.

"Hello," Veronica said, answering the phone without looking at the caller ID.

"Hey, V," Dick said, sounding kind of relieved. He had been hiding out in Neptune since he had gotten back from living with his dad in the Caymans. It was sort of nice to hear a familiar voice. "It's Dick."

"Hey, stranger," Veronica said, putting the file away and leaning back in her chair. "How's post grad life treating you?"

"It's not exactly the beach bum life I'd dreamed of," Dick admitted. "This summer's sort of sucked, actually."

"Really? What's up?" Veronica asked.

Dick sighed. "Uh, my brother. He died in May. It was, um, suicide."

"Oh my god, Dick," Veronica said, sitting straight up. "What happened?"

"Cassidy was sick. He was abused by that prick Woody Goodman when he was a kid and that screwed him up," he said. He didn't mention his feelings that his dad and himself were also to blame for his brother being screwed up in the head. "Two other kids that Goodman had screwed with were going to tell so he, um, Cassidy killed them. A whole bunch of other kids too. Blew up a bus."

Dick sighed again. "I guess he thought he was going to get away with it. But, um, somebody found out what he did. He ended up jumping off the roof of the Neptune Grand when he was confronted about it."

He didn't know much about what happened on the roof. Logan had refused to tell him anything. He did know, however, what his brother had done to Veronica. Dick just didn't know how to say it to her, or if he had even done it in this Veronica's universe.

"... oh, wow," Veronica said. "Um... I had no idea. I remember hearing something about a bus crash my senior year, but... I never knew anything about Cassidy being involved with it."

She wondered who had confronted him about it. It sounded like something she would do...

"Yeah. I wouldn't think he was capable of doing something like that," But he guessed he didn't know his little brother as well as he thought. "I only just got back to Neptune. I've been with my dad in the Caymans. Nobody exactly wants to hang out with the brother of a psycho killer, you know?"

Well, Logan wanted to hang out with him but Dick didn't really want to hang out with one of the people who saw his brother die.

"I'm sorry," Veronica said. "I don't think anyone will blame you for what he did though."

She chewed her lip for a moment. "I'm in DC this summer. You can come visit, if you want."

Yeah, that was probably a bad idea, but she wanted to offer anyway.

"You'd be surprised," Like Dick had told Logan, nobody wants to hang out at Casa de Killer. Which would be why he was planning on selling his house.

Dick smiled at the invitation. He was glad she was doing that FBI thing she mentioned at Prom. "Thanks, but I don't think I want to be that close to so many Feds."

Veronica chuckled. "That sounds fair. I'll be back in Neptune sometime in August if you want to escape your dimension. We'd just have to make sure not to run into the other you."

"Honestly, I think if I did run into him I'd be able to convince him that we're cousins or something with little trouble," Dick admitted.

"Well... that's entirely possible," Veronica agreed. Dick wasn't exactly the brightest bulb.

"Yeah, I'll just change my name to Peter or something if I visit," he joked.

Veronica laughed. "So what are your plans for the fall? Are you going to go to Hearst?"

Dick scratched his head. "I've been thinking about it, yeah. I know the application deadline has passed but my mom just got married to somebody who's pretty high up. Said he might be able to pull a few strings."

"It might be good for you," Veronica said. "And you can always bribe me to help with your homework."

"Gasp! Veronica Mars is encouraging my bad behavior?" Dick said with mock surprise. "And here I thought you'd want me to study for my good grades."

"I said I'd help," Veronica pointed out. "Not that I'd do it for you."

"Aw, that's no fun," he said. His pout could probably be heard over the phone.

"How are you supposed to learn anything if I do it for you?" she asked.

"Osmosis?" he suggested.

"I'm pretty sure I don't want my brain doing anything like that with yours," Veronica said. "I'm afraid of what I might learn in return."

"Only good things, Mars. Only good things," Dick said, smirking.

Veronica chuckled again. "I dunno, Dick. Your brain seems like it could be a pretty scary place."

"Scary? No. Mildly disturbing? Yes," he said. "There's a difference."

"I really don't think I need to know what you think about me naked," she admitted.

"Why not?" he asked. "It's all good things."

Veronica shook her head. "Well, that's good, I guess."
