Phone Call to Angel - Friday Morning

Veronica woke up Friday morning and decided she had enough of wondering if she'd recalled her email in time.

Mindful of the time zone difference, she waited as long as she could before dialing Angel's number... but it was still pretty early in LA when he would have heard his phone ring.

Angel was in his own bed and had slept about as well as a guy who was still dreaming of killing people could sleep.

Also he was never a morning person even on a good day.

It was entirely possible he wasn't holding his Blackberry the right way up when he grabbed it. "'lo?"

"Hello? Angel?" It sounded like he answered the phone, but for some reason, his voice sounded really far away.

"V'ronica? What are you doing here?"

Oh yeah. So not fully awake yet.

Veronica blinked. "What am I doing where? I'm still in Fandom." She looked around to make sure that she was, indeed, in her dorm room. "Did you answer the phone in your sleep?"

"No?" Angel rubbed his face tiredly. Unfortunately he used the hand holding the Blackberry. He nearly dropped it, then managed to recover. Now he was holding it the right way. "'m up, 'm up."

"Sorry I woke you," Veronica apologized. "How's everything going?"

Given a choice of talking about his feelings and problems vs. being stoic, Angel of course unburdened his soul to Veronica.

"It's good. Angela and Marty are here."

Or not.

"Oh, that's right. I forgot they were visiting this week. Tell them I said hi?" Veronica requested.

She wondered exactly how best to bring up the subject of the email without rousing Angel's suspicions.

Then she remembered who she was talking to.

"Hey, did I send you an email the other day?"

"I don't know. Did you?"

"I think I did, but I think I sent you the wrong one. When was the last time you checked?"

Angel thought back. "Couple weeks ago? Maybe? Why?"

That sound? Would be a huge sigh of relief. "Oh, I would have sent this on Monday," Veronica said. "Once I realized my mistake, I recalled the message, but I was hoping I hadn't... confused you."

"Why? What'd it say?" Angel asked.

"Nothing important. It was meant for Angela. Girl stuff, you know?"

"Oh. Okay," Angel said, totally falling for it. "Say, long as I've got you on the phone, can I ask you something?"

"Sure what's up?"

"Has Callisto seemed... especially homicidal recently?" Angel asked. "You know, moreso than usual?"

"I haven't run into her lately," Veronica admitted. "But I've heard some unusual things on the radio. Apparently she made her class turn over their clothes yesterday."

"She made them do what now?"

"According to Bridge, who apparently crashed the workshop yesterday, she made them strip down to their underwear."

"Oh God," Angel said, with the tone of voice one might normally use to notice a large monster about to eat your head off.

"I don't know what's going on," Veronica said. "Do you want me to try to find her and talk to her?"

"No!" Angel said at once. "I mean - not - not because of me. Do not tell her you talked to me. Tell her you didn't get me, I haven't been around and - uh - I flushed the Blackberry down the toilet so it's been in the shop all week. Yeah. That should work."

"Uh... okay..." Veronica said slowly. "Any particular reason?"

"...no?"

"Okay, whatever you say," Veronica said. "Are you guys having fun with Marty and Angela? Showing them the sights and all?"

"It's definitely been a change of pace," Angel said. "Actually, they've been helping me and Logan with a case."

"You put your guests to work?" Veronica asked. "I guess I'll cancel my plans for a visit."

"What? You thought you'd be staying in my hotel for free?" Angel teased.

"I've got my own cases to keep me busy," Veronica said. "What are you guys working on at the moment? I'm doing a routine background check on one of the new kids."

"Murder case," Angel said, since that was both truthful and vague. "Actually, I should see if anything's turned up during the night. It's a good thing you woke me."

"Be careful," Veronica said. "And glad to be of service."

"I'll tell everybody you said hi," Angel said.

"Thanks. And I really will look at my schedule and find a few days to come out for a visit," Veronica promised.

"Same here. I'd better let you get some work done. I have to get ready to stop by the school art fair. I encouraged my students to enter some of their photographs."

"Okay," Angel said. "Keep me posted on the latest. Talk to you later."

Veronica hung up and couldn't remember a time when she'd been so relieved.
